Burning smells, sparks, power outages and shocks — the safe steps to take in a Sydney electrical emergency while help is on the way.
Make the area safe first
If you can safely reach the switchboard, turn off the main switch. If there is smoke, fire or a burning smell you cannot locate, leave the building and call 000 first.
Never touch a person who is in contact with live electricity. Isolate the supply first, then assist.
What not to do
Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping — it is doing its job and telling you there is a fault. Do not pour water on an electrical fire. Do not attempt to open a switchboard, replace fuse wire or investigate wiring yourself.
Keep everyone clear of any fallen powerline and call Ausgrid on 13 13 88 immediately.
Then call us
Bright Electrical answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 0421 664 004 and describe what you are seeing — we will talk you through immediate safety steps while an electrician is dispatched.
Have your switchboard location and, if possible, a description of what happened before the fault ready. It speeds up diagnosis significantly.
