Why the switchboard matters more than anything else
Your switchboard is the single point where every circuit in the property is protected. If it is old, undersized or missing safety switches, nothing downstream is genuinely safe — no matter how new the wiring behind your walls is.
Many Sydney homes built before the late 1990s still run rewireable ceramic fuses. Those fuses were designed to protect the cable, not the person holding the appliance. Modern RCDs trip in under 30 milliseconds on an earth fault, which is the difference between a fright and a fatality.
The seven signs worth acting on
1. Ceramic fuses or fuse wire instead of circuit breakers. 2. No safety switch (RCD) on power and lighting circuits. 3. Breakers that trip regularly with normal use. 4. A switchboard that is warm to the touch or smells of hot plastic. 5. Discoloured, scorched or crumbling components. 6. No spare capacity for a new circuit such as an EV charger or air conditioner. 7. Handwritten, incorrect or missing circuit labels.
Any one of these is worth a conversation. Two or more together usually means an upgrade will cost less than repeatedly chasing faults.
What an upgrade actually involves
A typical residential upgrade takes four to six hours. We isolate the supply, remove the old board, install a new enclosure with RCBOs on every circuit, re-terminate and test each circuit, then label everything clearly.
You are left with individual protection per circuit — so a faulty toaster no longer takes out the whole house — and documented test results proving the installation is compliant.
